Bolivia is holding a constitutional referendum Sunday, January 25. The referendum has been hotly contested in Bolivia and its current version is much watered down compared to the original document. It is expected to pass easily and includes provision for political reforms, land reform, the advancement social programs and indigenous rights and will make changes to the country's oil and gas laws.
On Friday January 23rd, I spoke with Jim Shultz, executive director of the Democracy Center, which is located in Cochabamba, Bolivia. He is also the co-editor, with Melissa Crane Draper of the book “Dignity and Defiance: Stories from Bolivia's Challenge to Globalization”. They will be accompanying other Democracy Center activists on US tour in February to raise awareness of the impact of US policy towards Latin America.
